I-70 Traffic Shifts Scheduled as Work Progresses to Construct New Pavement near Wright City
September 8, Interstate 70 traffic shifts are planned in Warren County, beginning east of the Routes F/J/Elm St. interchange in Wright City extending to the St. Charles County line (mile marker 201.0 – 202.8), as work continues on the Improve I-70: Warrenton to Wentzville project. Eastbound traffic will shift right and westbound traffic will shift left onto the newly constructed pavement for the future eastbound I-70 to allow crews to construct all westbound lanes simultaneously.
After the traffic switch occurs, traffic barriers will be in place along the right and left shoulders of westbound I-70 for these areas with designated emergency pull-off locations. Two lanes of traffic will be maintained on I-70 during peak travel times, and the speed limit will remain 55 mph throughout the work zone. Westbound I-70 will have intermittent nighttime right lane closures during this time.
The above traffic impacts are scheduled through the end of 2026. Motorists are encouraged to pay attention in work zones, drive the posted work zone speed limit, and allow extra time for travel. All work is weather-dependent, and schedules are subject to change.
This work is part of the second project in MoDOT’s Statewide Improve I-70 Program. Improve I-70 Warrenton to Wentzville is a $600 million Design-Build project that will improve the 20-mile stretch of I-70 between Warrenton and Wentzville. The project was awarded to the Improve 70 Alliance team in November 2024. Construction is anticipated to be complete by the end of 2028.
Missouri’s FY2024 budget, approved through the state legislative process and signed into law by the governor, provides $2.8 billion in General Revenue to build a third lane of I-70 across the state. The program will plan, design, construct, reconstruct, rehabilitate, and add a third lane in each direction on nearly 200 miles of I-70, from Blue Springs to Wentzville.

The City of Warrenton’s Military Honoree Banner Program was designed to honor and recognize those currently serving or who have served in the United States Armed Forces and pay tribute to our veterans and deceased veterans. The display of the Military Banners will contribute to the community’s quality of life which lend a special character to the City of Warrenton.

MO-DOT Improve I-70 Project
Earlier this year, Missouri lawmakers passed the largest road construction project in state history. A total of $2.8 billion was budgeted by Missouri Congress and Governor Mike Parson, the campaigner of this project, to rebuild Interstate 70 from St. Louis to Kansas City.
How will the project be funded?
The money to pay for the I-70 project will come from two sources: half of the projected $2.8 billion will come from the current state budget and the other half will come from bond revenue.
How will this project improve Interstate 70 near Warrenton?
Below is the cost breakdown for the Eastern Rural portion of the I-70 project that runs from Route Z to Warrenton (60 miles), the St. Louis Suburban portion of the project that runs from Warrenton to Wentzville (20 miles), as well as the Columbia portion of the project that runs from Midway to Route Z (13 miles).
