Ride Along Program

In 2012 the Police Department established a civilian ride along program. This program provides an opportunity for individuals to observe a Warrenton Police officer on patrol. Participants ride with the officer in their patrol car and get a firsthand look at the daily operations of the Warrenton Police Department. Scheduling is flexible. Ride Along Participant Rules & Guidelines

  1. Anyone who wishes to participate should call or visit the Warrenton Police Department to obtain a requestform. Arrangements must be made at least (3) days in advance of the desired ride-along date.
  2. Prior to the ride-along, participants must sign a Release and Waiver of Liability form and agree to a criminalhistory background check.
  3. Participants shall be neatly dressed and groomed. Jeans of any color, T-shirts, collarless shirts, sweatshirts,sweatpants and slippers will not be permitted.
  4. Participants will be under the supervision of a police officer at all times.
  5. Participants must be in good general health with no need for assistance.
  6. Female participants cannot ride if they are pregnant or suspect they may be pregnant.
  7. Participants shall not leave the police vehicle at the scene of any police activity without first obtaining thepermission of the supervising officer.
  8. Participants shall not converse with any prisoners, suspects or witnesses, nor shall they participate in anypolice activity unless directed to do so by the officer and that request can be accomplished in a safe manner.
  9. Tape recorders, cameras and video equipment will not be permitted while participating in the program with theexception of accredited media representatives who have made the necessary arrangements through theDirector of Public Safety and/or Command Staff.
  10. Participants must have a valid photo ID or drivers license with them when reporting for their scheduled ride-along.
  11. Participants shall be considered an observer only, and shall be under the direct supervision of the assignedofficer during the ride-along.
  12. Participants shall conduct themselves in a civil and courteous manner at all times.
  13. Participants must wear their seat belts at all times while in the patrol vehicle.
  14. Participants must remain in the patrol vehicle unless instructed to leave by an officer.
  15. In the case of a potentially dangerous or hazardous call, participants may be dropped off at a safe location. Ifthis occurs, the officer will give the participant specific instructions and arrange to have them picked up byanother officer. Please note that this is for the rider’s safety.
  16. Participants must not become involved in any incident the officer is handling. This includes discussions of anincident with victims, witnesses, or suspects
  17. For security and safety reasons, participants are not allowed to handle or use any of the officer’s equipment orthe equipment in the patrol vehicle.

Failure to comply with any of the above listed rules and guidelines will result in the immediate termination of the Ride-Along.
